Burial comment:
Susie Christian Hodgson we had a great celebration of life today for Mom. The mass was beautiful. At the cemetery doves were released as well as 92 balloons (one for each year she was with us). Lunch at Buca's finished up the day with a toast to Mom and the life she lived. A very precious day in celebrating Mom's life.
NEWSPAPER OBITUARY WRITTEN BY: William Hodgson

Evangeline “Eva” (Splater) Hodgson – Born 6/29/1917, in Perry County, IN to the late Charles W. and Nora (Nix) Splater. Husband Ralph W. Hodgson passed away in 1982.
She was the last surviving Grandchild of the John Frederick Splete family that immigrated to Southern Indiana from Husede, Germany in 1846.

Evangeline was raised in and around the Ohio River communities of Cannelton, Tell City and Troy. Orphaned at the age of 12, she became a boarding student and then a graduate of the St. Agnes Academy in Indianapolis. Eva was most recently a parishioner of Little Flower Catholic Church.

Eva has been the beloved Matriarch to all seven of her surviving children’s families:
Daughter Mary E. (Ron) Reever and sons Richard L. (Kathy), Ralph E. (Teresa),
William J. (Triesa), Michael A. (Susie), Stephen L. (Jennifer), and Charles E. Hodgson.
Second born daughter Patricia Ann died in infancy.
Her life was blessed with twelve grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

Eva will be greatly missed as our family cornerstone. While Holiday gatherings may have a somber tone, we trust memories of her subtle yet pungent wit will continue to bring wry smiles.

Eva was an excellent cook of traditional American foods. Tasty potato dishes, savory Pot Roast (Gramma meat!) and everyone’s Sunday favorite, chicken & homemade noodles, come to mind.
An intuitively gifted gardener, one always found flowers and bird feeders in Grandma’s yard.
Eva would determine the favorite colors of family and friends (sometimes surreptitiously) and then spend days lovingly knitting them a cozy afghan.

In addition to being a dedicated mother and homemaker for her family, Eva also enjoyed a successful working career with Sears Roebuck & Company. She worked her way up from a modest entry-level position to become the Sears Service Center Human Resources Manager.
She retired in 1980 to care for her ailing husband.

Eva thereafter became active in area church and volunteer organizations. Her executive and organizational skills were put to good use in several responsible volunteer positions with Community Hospitals of Indianapolis. Eva also served a number of years as Treasurer for the charitable Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

The family would like to thank the caring professionals of the Castleton Rehabilitation and Nursing Home and People First Home Care and Hospice for their many kindnesses these past several months.

Contributions in her memory may be made to The St. Vincent de Paul Society or the grade schools of St. Phillips Neri or Little Flower Catholic churches.
